Retaining Rain and Nourishing Norfolk
Trail lovers, the ERT has had a banner year with the addition of three urban agriculture spaces and one brand new green space, making a total of 10 Foundation maintained green spaces along our 10.5 mile trail. Our green spaces have multiple purposes; one, of course, being the beautification of the city of Norfolk for all trail users to enjoy. But did you know that the beautification acts as a barrier against litter entering the river, and the native plants can also behave as a sponge during times of flooding? And naturally, those native plants attract pollinators and increase our local biodiversity.
As if it couldn’t get any better, WE’VE GOT BARRELS FOLKS! With the help of our wonderful volunteers, we’ve been able to maintain these green spaces and acquire barrels to serve as water catchment systems to help collect rainfall and keep all of these newly planted native species watered. The work is continuous and that’s where you come in. Please consider joining us in maintaining these spaces through Club Cultivate or our Green Team and look for the volunteer call to help install our three new rain barrels at two different locations.
