Celebrate Trails Day April 27 on the Elizabeth River Trail
April 24, 2024

More than just a day outside, Celebrate Trails Day is a chance to participate in a united day of support for trails across America. Our trails, such as the Elizabeth River Trail, create ways for people to connect in their community, participate in health and wellness activities and do something good for the environment. Part of the National Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s Celebrate Trails Day initiative, the Elizabeth River Trail Foundation will mark this year’s special day in a unique way. In anticipation of the future Virginia Beach trail, which will run from Newtown Road to the oceanfront, special activities are planned at the Newtown Road light rail station from 10 am to 1 pm. Everyone is invited to participate.

Elizabeth River Trail Foundation Announces Call for Submissions for Poetry on the Trail
April 24, 2024

For the last two years, ERT has provided a Poetry on the Trail program in partnership with Norfolk Public Libraries along with poetry from local poets painted on the trail. The ERT, in collaboration with the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail, in King George County, will open submissions for Poetry on the Trail as a permanent trail feature with annually rotating poems through a combination of curated selections and open submissions. Poetry on the Trail submissions will be accepted through June 1.

Elizabeth River Trail Foundation’s 2024 Free Programs Expand Through Partnerships
February 15, 2024

The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation offers an even broader variety of programs through new and existing partnerships in 2024. They include beautification opportunities with the Norfolk Master Gardeners, increased group paddle sessions with Norfolk Kayak Rentals, ERT’s first wildlife-focused tour in collaboration with Elizabeth River Project’s Otter Spotter program, and a new Spinclusion program that will offer bike rides to those with limited or different abilities. Tours, events, community programs, and beautification days continue through the summer into the fall. The trail offers something for everyone with free programs and events throughout the year!

Elizabeth River Trail Foundation named tHRive Young Professionals Organization of the Year
January 26, 2024

The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation has been named as the tHRive Organization of the Year. The coming year will offer many opportunities for tHRive’s members to participate in helping the trail and the Foundation. tHRive members will support the trail through beautification projects at the Managed Meadow in Chelsea and Donor Sculpture by the Pagoda, shoreline restoration at Plum Point Park, fundraising, and supporting trail programs including the Glow Party, Puppy Parade, Clean the Bay Day and International Coastal Cleanup.

Elizabeth River Trail Foundation Benefits from Two Virginia Outdoors Foundation Wetland Watch Grants
September 25, 2023

The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation is pleased to announce it was awarded a $5,000 Stewardship Project grant from the Wetlands Watch. The grant provides funding that will allow the Foundation to continue enhancing its managed meadow in the Chelsea section of the trail. The ERT will also benefit from a $10,000 Green Infrastructure grant awarded to Weyanoke Shoreline Restoration to complete the restoration of a residential tidal shoreline on Lambert’s Creek along the trail, adjacent to the Weyanoke Bird & Wildlife Sanctuary.

Elizabeth River Trail Foundation Announces Its First Water-based Program
June 28, 2023

The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation is partnering with Norfolk Kayak Rentals for a group paddle series. Norfolk Kayak Rentals will be providing a limited number of free kayaks and leading the group 3-5 miles on the Elizabeth River starting from the Plum Point Park Kayak Launch. Participants are welcome to bring their own kayak as well, but previous kayaking experience is required. This three-part series will kick off with the first group paddle on July 8 from 8:30 – 10 AM. Creating a ‘blueway’ has been a long-time vision of the Foundation to better connect people with the ERT’s namesake river and provide a different perspective of the trail.

$400k Grant Received from Virginia Outdoors Foundation for the Larchmont Library Trailhead
June 8, 2023

The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation has been awarded the largest grant in the ERT’s history for the Larchmont Library Trailhead. The grant, awarded by Virginia Outdoors Foundation, will help the Foundation transform the area around Larchmont Library. Improvements will include enhanced accessibility and connection to the trail, improved signage, and recreational amenities that can be enjoyed by all.

Celebrate National Trails Day and Earth Day April 22 on the Elizabeth River Trail!
April 1, 2023

A small section of Right of Way at the intersection of Park Ave. and Lovitt Ave. has been adopted by the ERT. This empty space will be transformed into the first Pocket Park on the trail on April 22 with the help of the Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast, Rotary Club of Norfolk, and many other volunteers. In honor of Earth Day and Celebrate Trails Day, the activities are focused on service and bringing attention to the eastern section of the trail. A Little Free Library and raised pollinator garden will be installed thanks to the $3,000 sponsorship gfrom Lyon’s Shipyard’s and soil donated by Tidewater Compost.

Elizabeth River Trail Foundation Announces New Programs and Partnerships for 2023

The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation is pleased to announce an expanded year of programming and new partnerships with EVMS and Old Dominion University. Partnerships continue with Norfolk Tour Company and Norfolk Master Gardeners. The 2023 schedule also includes the launch of ERT 101 Group Rides. All programs are free and open to the public.

Elizabeth River Trail Foundation Awarded $5,000 Grant from Norfolk Southern
December 13, 2022

The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation was one of 57 organizations to receive a 2022 Norfolk Southern grant. A luncheon to celebrate the grant recipients and their impact on the community was held on December 12. This program is part of Norfolk Southern’s five-year commitment to award $1 million each year to nonprofits who support education, the environment, social equity and community advancement.

The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation is celebrating the completion of The Glowline with a ribbon cutting and Glow Party on October 29 from 5 to 7pm. The Glowline is the first-of-its-kind amenity on the East Coast and is located on the Elizabeth River Trail that  runs through Jeff Robertson Park in West Ghent.

Elizabeth River Trail Foundation Awarded $1,500 Retain Your Rain Grant
October 17, 2022

The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation, in partnership with The Garden Club of Norfolk, have been awarded a $1,500 Retain Your Rain Grant from the City of Norfolk’s Office of Resilience. The grant will help support the installation of a rain garden and ecological greenway at Jeff Robertson Park along the trail. The Olmsted Rain Garden will honor the father of American Landscape, Frederick Olmsted, who created Central Park and believed a city is only as great as its parks.

Elizabeth River Trail Foundation Announces the Elizabeth River Run 10k Back on September 4
September 1, 2022

The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation, in partnership with Tidewater Striders Run Club, will be hosting the 43rd Annual Elizabeth River Run 10K and mile races on September 4, 2022, presented by Sentara. The race has become a Hampton Roads legacy and anticipates over 800 participants from Virginia and across the country. The race will begin at 7:45 AM at Old Dominion University and finish at the Port of Virginia.

The 45th Elizabeth River Run 10K has a new date and new face with The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation as the Presenting Sponsor of this sapphire year. The race will continue along the beautiful ERT course and will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2024. Tidewater Striders will continue to oversee race operations. As a Presenting Sponsor, the Foundation will assist with marketing the race and volunteer recruitment, and runners will continue to support the ERT Foundation with their race registration.

In its third year, the African American History Tour continues to draw large crowds. In February Norfolk Tour Company’s owner and Chief Tour Guide, Josh Weinstein, will share stories of the Elizabeth River as a means of self-emancipation. A version of the tour will be revisited in June in honor of Juneteenth.

Tour Offers Chance to walk through enslaved Black person’s life in Norfolk

“The tour focuses on what it was like to live as an enslaved Black person in Norfolk, what type of jobs were here, what type of economy they were a part of,” said Joshua Weinstein, owner and chief tour guide of Norfolk Tour Company.

The tour includes stories of dramatic escapes, as well as national events and trends of the 1800s that resonated here in Hampton Roads. It’s that type of hidden history that Weinstein hopes to bring to life on his tour, which relies on 12 historical sources, including research from Norfolk State University scholar Cassandra Newby-Alexander and the Norfolk Public Library’s Sargeant Memorial Collection.

The Underground River tour starts at 2 p.m. Feb. 17. No registration required. The tour group will meet at the western entrance of Waterside Marina.

Elizabeth River Trail Foundation to Dedicate New Park on Sept. 21 at 11 AM
September 15, 2023

The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation will dedicate its new Pocket Park on the corner of Park and Lovitt Avenues on September 21 at 11am. The public is invited to attend the celebration of this new amenity in the area adjacent to Harbor Park and Norfolk State University. The ceremony will include the official opening of the Community Needs Pantry, and the public is encouraged to bring personal hygiene items to stock the pantry and books to restock the Little Free Library. A live oak tree will be dedicated to commemorate ERT’s first Executive Director, Cheryl White, who will attend the celebration.

The Elizabeth River Run 10K Is Back On The Elizabeth River Trail Sept. 3
August 25, 2023

The Elizabeth River Run 10K has the distinction this year of being a designated Road Runners Club of America (RCAA) Championship race bringing the fastest runners in Virginia to the Elizabeth River Trail on Sept. 3. The 44th Annual Elizabeth River Run 10k kicks off at 7:15 am at Powhattan Ave. and 43rd Street with a one-mile kid’s run. At 7:45 am, the 10K starts with a race to the Port of Virginia.

Let the good times roll: No shortage of community bike rides in Norfolk

A jumble of sleek road bikes built for speed and upright Townies more suited to easy cruising filled the bike racks outside a brewery Sunday after a community bike ride. The riders rested in the shade or cooled down with a beer, catching up with friends and chatting with other cyclists. According to avid cyclist, Leonard Akbar who drove from Newport News with several friends for the ride, “Biking brings everyone together,”.

The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation is replacing aging asphalt — which wasn’t graded properly and was plagued by pooling water — with glow stones that will absorb sunlight throughout the day, then glow at night, without any electricity.

Thanks to a recent grant, 17 trees were planted at the new Plum Point Park Trailhead obstacle course Saturday. The trees were possible due to Norfolk’s Office of Resilience being awarded the Elizabeth River Trail (ERT) Foundation a Retain Your Rain grant.
