Tell us about yourself.
I moved to Virginia from my home state of Minnesota in 1996 to attend Tidewater Community College first and then Virginia Commonwealth University. Two associate’s and a bachelor’s degree later, I landed back on the Peninsula working as a graphic designer for a small firm. Life changes led to a job change with some freelance work added in. WPA was one of my freelance clients until they offered me a full-time position. Five years later and I’ve grown into the role of marketing director and am loving every minute of it.
How did you get connected to the ERT and the Foundation?
Upon starting at WPA, the marketing committee for ERT was recommended to me. Also, one of my first design projects at WPA was creating the pattern for The Glowline. I love being able to utilize great walking spaces like the ERT, so it was a natural fit for me to be part of this great organization.
Tell us about your experience being on the ERT Marketing Committee and a regular volunteer at ERT events.
I love being able to offer my graphic design experience on the marketing committee and enjoy volunteering whenever I can. The Elizabeth River Run is a fun event to volunteer at, I used to be a runner and love being able to cheer the runners on. My favorite event, and area on the trail, is the annual Glow Party and The Glowline. It’s a gorgeous space and becomes a bit magical when the sunsets and the design glows. I’ve had the opportunity to design the section signage and the trailhead shelter signs for the ERT in addition to The Glowline pattern. It’s meaningful to me to have had a part in this great amenity.
Given your background, what benefits do you feel the trail has for Norfolk?
The ERT offers a location for people to enjoy gorgeous views while getting exercise, visiting businesses on the trail, and learning more about the great areas surrounding the trail.
What does being a part of the trail user community mean to you?
It’s a great community of people that are passionate about the trail. We all want to share the word about this great asset and want to help protect it, promote it, and improve it.
If you met someone who just moved to Norfolk, what would you say to get them interested in the trail?
Just go to Plum Point Park to watch the sunset, then go to Jeff Robertson Park to see The Glowline. It’s amazing.
What is your favorite place on the trail?
Plum Point Park would be number one, mainly due to the proximity to the water and the beautiful views. I’m a sucker for sunsets. Second to that would of course be The Glowline.
Favorite Trailgrazing spot? (i.e. best local food spot steps from the trail)
Benchtop has been one of my favorite breweries since the day they opened. Great drinks, wonderful staff and owners, very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.
