Tell us about yourself.
I’m a middle-aged, empty-nester who very recently began to focus on my health and fitness. In my day job, I am a strategic planning consultant for a national firm and I serve the City of Norfolk as Vice-Chair of the Norfolk Planning Commission. My personal interests include advocating for positive change in Norfolk and beyond, reading, and entertaining at my home in Berkley with family and friends.
How and when did you start (or join) the walking group? How has that impacted you?
I started walking the ERT about 2 years ago to stay active. I’m more fit than I have been in probably decades and I’ve seen so much beauty along the Elizabeth River.
How did you get connected to the ERT and the Foundation?
Given your background, what benefits do you feel the trail has for Norfolk?
I think that the ERT provides an opportunity for Norfolk residents to have a safe, scenic, and secure place to walk, run, and bike near where they live, learn, work and play.
What does being a part of the trail user community mean to you?
I walk along the Berkley Bridge toward Harbor Park before sunrise so there aren’t very many folks out at that time of the morning. Typically, there are a couple of joggers or bikers and lots of workers using the trail to go to their jobs at the shipyard. Everyone is usually preoccupied, looking at their phones or listening to music but we all take a moment to make eye contact and say “good morning”. It’s a great way to start the day!
If you met someone who just moved to Norfolk, what would you say to get them interested in the trail?
I would talk to them about the paved trails that make it easy to run/walk on an even surface. I would describe the views and friendly people.
What is your favorite place on the trail?
My favorite section is the area near Harbor Park where there are swings, picnic tables, and park benches. They are located near beautiful views of the river and the city skyline.
Favorite Trailgrazing spot? (i.e. best local food spot steps from the trail)
I usually walk the trail before restaurants open.
