What is your personal connection to the Elizabeth River Trail?

I’ve worked in downtown Norfolk for nearly 20 years and have watched the area transform greatly.  I love a Fall bike ride with my kids on the trail. Many of my coworkers enjoy lunchtime walks on the trail stopping at Cure Coffee, Nauticus, or Waterside to grab a quick bite to eat.

Why did you/your company decide to provide sponsorship to the trail?

Kaufman & Canoles is deeply committed to community service, with our attorneys and staff dedicating their time, talent, and resources to making a positive impact in the areas where we live and work. Our sponsorship of the Elizabeth River Trail is a testament to this commitment. Kaufman & Canoles attorney Chuck McPhillips played a pivotal role in the trail’s development, leading efforts to rally support, secure funding, and bring the project to fruition. His vision and dedication transformed the trail into a vibrant, accessible space that enhances recreational opportunities and connectivity along the river. We are proud to support the trail and honor Chuck’s contributions, reflecting the same integrity, passion, and innovation that guide our legal practice.

Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what benefits do you feel the trail has for the business community?

The Elizabeth River Trail offers several significant benefits for the business community. It enhances local economic activity by attracting visitors and increasing foot traffic to nearby businesses. Additionally, the trail fosters community engagement and improves the overall quality of life, which can lead to higher employee satisfaction and retention. By supporting the trail, businesses can contribute to a thriving, vibrant community that benefits both their operations and the broader regional economy.

What’s your favorite trail moment?

Our firm loves running the ADP Corporate 5K, which takes place each June on part of the trail!

Favorite Trailgrazing spot? (i.e. best local food spot steps from the trail)

Personally, I’m a fan of Cure Coffee!

Best view of the Elizabeth River from the trail?

We think the best view of the Elizabeth River Trail is from our office building at the corner of Boush and Main Streets.
